Nothing makes my heart flutter more than barn doors, shiplap, and farmhouse decor. My obsession with farm life began as a pre-teen watching Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie try their hand at farming on their reality TV series The Simple Life, where they made farm life look ridiculously funny and fabulous. Since then, my love of farmhouse decor grew from watching dozens of episodes of Joanna and Chip Gaines on HGTV transform boring homes into modern, dreamy farmhouse spaces. As life has turned out, I'm not a farmer, but I continuously find myself looking for ways to incorporate farmhouse decor into my non-farm lifestyle. So whether you live on the coast in a studio or a cozy apartment, you can still bring the farmhouse vibe into your space.

Below are five ways to incorporate your love of farmhouse decor into your space (minus the dirt and cows).

Create a farmhouse-inspired focal point.

One of the benefits of farmhouse decor is its ability to make a big statement without having to be too "extra." With this type of decor, sometimes less is more. One way to showcase your love of this style is to create a farmhouse focal point in your space. You can do this a few ways: by adding texture to one of the walls in your space with wood or shiplap (this can be a free-standing wall or privacy wall), by adding a large lantern-style light fixture above a kitchen island, or by choosing a paint color (warm tans, grays, or mild greens) and painting your space with these inviting colors.

Bring mother nature inside your space.

Greenery is a huge part of farmhouse decor! Two great things about adding greenery and pampas grass to your space are that it doesn't take up much room, and it gracefully brings in the outdoor elements that we love about farmhouse decor into your small and cozy space. You can add these to your space by adding a greenery-designed wreath to your front door or tablescape or by picking out your favorite plant and pampas grasses and placing them in a neutral-colored vase next to your window.

Don’t shy away from wooden furniture or fixtures.

Wooden furniture and fixtures can effortlessly create farmhouse-inspired spaces without extra work on your end. Wood dressers, storage chests, dining room tables, and shelves are all farm decor items that are sturdy, classic, and timeless. One way to make your wood furniture have a little more flair is to break out the paintbrushes and add a little paint to your next project. Painting wood in farm decor-inspired colors is a sure way to make your pieces stand out.

Spell it with a sign.

All great farm-inspired homes have signs of endearment, a family name, popular quotes, or nature-based art. I'm going to challenge you to retire your "live, love, laugh" sign and upgrade to a sign that shows who you truly are or that means something sentimental to you or your family. Farm homes are all about comfort, warmth, and getting those homey vibes. Some great ways to use signs include hanging them in doorways, above mantles (if you're feeling fancy), or on a cute sign with your family's last name outside your home.

Create a gallery wall.

Again, a farm-inspired home should feel inviting, warm, and full of love. Another way to show off your love of farmhouse decor is to make a themed gallery wall of personal photos and farm-based wall trinkets; this is the perfect addition to any space that needs more personality. These walls can be designed however you choose, and they are the perfect excuse for you to finally use all of those family photos hiding away in your phone's photo app!
