Designing with Animal Prints

Designing with Animal Prints

Take a walk on the wide side. Decorating with animal prints is easier (and less scary) than you'd think!

Love them or hate them, there's something about animal prints that just scream luxury and sophistication. It’s the bold move you admire and lust for from afar (for now). Maybe it's because animal prints have been in the fashion industry for decades or because they add a touch of wildness to any space. Either way, using animal prints in your interior design plans can be a great way to add some visual interest and drama to your home. No animal paw print patterns are necessary. We promise!

What might take you by surprise is how versatile animal prints can be. They work well with all sorts of other design elements, from traditional to contemporary and even mid-century modern. So if you’re ever feeling stuck when decorating, don’t hesitate to reach for some zebra print fabric or leopard print wallpaper! Just use them sparingly. Animal prints can add just the right amount of edge and glamour to your space and make it a fun conversation starter.

ANIMAL PRINTS HERE, THERE, EVERYWHERE!

If you want to add animal prints to your designs but prefer to start small, we recommend incorporating animal prints into your bedding (pillows, throw blankets, and other bedding accessories). It's far less commitment than investing in a bigger piece of furniture or decor like a rug. When you do feel confident about testing the waters with something bolder, moving onto rugs is a great choice! Animal print rugs will always make a big statement. They are attention-grabbing and can turn a previously boring space into something complete.

Regardless of whether you use genuine or faux animal rugs, there are a few things to remember here:

  • Hides can come natural and uniform in color (such as reindeer or cow), louder prints like zebra, or something faux like a pink cheetah print.
  • Natural hides come in all shapes/sizes, meaning nothing is a true dimension, and there will always be a level of organic quality.
  • The larger an authentic hide, the more expensive it will be. If needed, you can layer it over other rugs to fill out a space.
  • The surrounding elements in your design should be softer or minimal in pattern when using an animal print area rug.
  • Many retailers sell standard-sized rugs (4x6, 5x8, 8x10, etc.) that have an animal pattern actually printed on them; this will give a similar effect without questioning if something is genuine animal or not.

GO EVEN BOLDER (with animal print on your furniture). PSA: This is not for the faint of heart and is a visually loud commitment. You’ll want to make sure the print style works with your color palette. You can do this by choosing tones that are similar to each other. For example, if you want to put zebra on your footstools, keep black and white throughout the space. If you prefer something like a tiger print (warmer tones), keep the surrounding elements in a similar color palette so the animal print doesn’t dominate the overall design of the space.
