You know the common workplace phrase, “We're not saving lives here”? Well, when it comes to Elizabeth Swedo’s job, that’s not always the case. Elizabeth is a doctor by day and an interior designer by night. As a pediatrician, she has found ways to incorporate her love for interior design into her practice. Consider us impressed.

Hi, Elizabeth! We'd love to hear about your story and what led you into the design world.

I'm an Atlanta-based pediatrician and injury epidemiologist by day and a lover of all things design and DIY by night. I've always been obsessed with interior design. My favorite book growing up was my mom's 1983 copy of Sunset's Children's Playrooms and Play Yards, but my love for design has often taken a backseat to my career in medicine. During my pediatric residency at the University of Washington in Seattle, I frequently cared for children who had been injured at home. I brainstormed ways to incorporate style and safety into children's home environments to prevent injuries and promote learning and play. From those experiences, Doctor Designs was born! Doctor Designs offers families the opportunity to have spaces in their homes designed with safety and style. While I most frequently design nurseries and playrooms, I also consult clients on how to make communal spaces work for the entire family.

If you had to choose, which 3 emojis would you pick to describe you?

Talk to us about your winning room mockup for this design challenge. What was the vision for this design?

I am officially obsessed with Revival's selection of vintage, one-of-a-kind rugs! I was really drawn to the richness of the colors and textures in the rug and used that to anchor and inspire the space. I've been leaning into "moody maximalism" in my inspiration searches lately. I love how cozy and vibrant you can make a space by painting or wallpapering all the walls and ceilings; it takes bravery, but the impact is so worth it!

Where do you find your inspiration?

Spoak has been such an incredible, inspiring community. I love popping on Slack to see what people are talking about and browsing other people's designs in the discovery feed to get ideas. I love Pinterest, Instagram, and Houzz for collecting digital images, but I also adore a good old-school magazine or catalog rip-out. (CB2, Ikea, and AllModern have very talented stylists!) I file physical images away in binders and flip through them for inspiration. Seeing how my style has evolved over the years has been fun.

Tell us about a designer or artist you love. What about them and their work are you drawn to?

I have a major designer crush on Kelly Wearstler. She is the queen of making spaces feel both luxe and organic.

What do you do on your time off to recharge creatively?

Traveling is huge for refilling my creativity. There's nothing better than finding a really lovely, artsy Airbnb in a new city. I love visiting vintage shops; there's a great monthly antique market near my city with amazing vintage and new pieces.

What's the best thing you've consumed recently?

Book: Cloud Cuckoo Land; Show: The Great Pottery Throwdown or Ghosts (British version ONLY, the American version is trash); Food: Five Daughters Bakery doughnuts; Drink: Lavender latte from Aurora Coffee.

National Park Collection Blanket by Pendelton, $269 — We received the throw version of this blanket as a wedding present ten years ago, and it is truly one of my favorite belongings. I'd love a bigger version to drape on the end of the bed. Warm, classic, timeless.

Affirmation Cards by Modern Love, $25 — I've started pulling one of these every morning to give an intention to the day and a mantra to fall back on. This deck is elegant, simple, and inspiring without being cheesy.

Calacatta Viola Marble Sink by Ata Marble Design, $1,170 — I aspire to one day have the type of life and home where having this sink makes sense. Until that day, I will just look at it longingly.

Venom Emerald Rug by Jonathan Adler, $269 — With two cats and a toddler, Ruggable rugs are a must-have in our home! Upgrading from a more traditional cream medallion-style rug to this green beauty has completely transformed our living room (and does a much better job hiding stains and dirt).

Gilded Rim Coupe Glasses by Anthropologie, $31 — I want a set of these, plus a fabulous bottle of champagne and a beautiful reason to celebrate!

Mid-Century Canopy Bed by West Elm, $1,399 — I feel like I put a canopy bed in every bedroom I design these days because they are so dramatic. Clearly, I need one for my bedroom!
