Design tips for decorating a cozy style bed + bathroom

Here’s how to achieve the cozy aesthetic room of your dreams.

What’s the best way to design and decorate a cozy bed + bathroom?

Whether you are designing for yourself or someone else, bed + bathrooms should be cozy and comfortable, providing a space to unwind, recharge, and escape the chaos of the world. Even if your typical design style is more maximalist, bed + bathrooms usually lean more minimalist to offer a serene backdrop for a good night’s sleep. Bed + bathroom layouts are also more simple. The square footage of your bed + bathroom and size of your bed frame will typically dictate the best layout.

Whether you're in the process of a bed + bathroom remodel or looking to makeover your existing one, these are the key elements to include in your design:|

  • Paint or Wallpaper: Bedroom walls set the mood for the space. Select a color or pattern that complements the cozy style you want to achieve. We are partial to covering walls, ceilings, and trim in a uniform paint color to create a cohesive look. Or consider an accent wall to serve as a focal point.
  • Bed: The bed is the centerpiece and typical focal point of any bedroom, providing a comfortable and restful place to sleep. It typically includes a mattress, bed frame, and headboard. Your cozy style can really shine by selecting bedding (sheets, duvet covers, and pillows) that match the aesthetic.
  • Nightstands: Nightstands (or bedside tables) are small tables or cabinets placed on either side of the bed. They provide a convenient surface for placing bedside lamps, alarm clocks, books, and other personal items. Pro tip: Bedside tables should be placed 2-4 inches from the bed frame and no more than 24 inches deep (any deeper and it can be pretty uncomfortable to get in and out of bed). If you choose to add a table lamp or a sconce, keep in mind the depth of the light to ensure you have enough space on the bedside table.
  • Area Rug: It’s common to include an area rug in a bedroom for extra warmth and coziness. There are three common layout options for rugs in the bedroom. Option 1, place the bed and nightstands entirely on the rug. Option 2, place ⅔ of the bed on the rug, with 24 inches extending beyond the sides of the bed. Option 3, place two runners along each side of the bed (the runners should be wider than the bedside tables, if possible).
  • Decorative Lighting: Combine task, ambient, and accent lighting for a layered lighting scheme. Typically in a bedroom, you’d want a flush surface mount or chandelier on the ceiling and wall-mounted sconces or table lamps on each side of the bed. Consider the placement of lighting fixtures to eliminate shadows and evenly light the space. Dimmer switches can adjust the mood.
  • Curtains or Blinds: In bedrooms, window treatments are not just design statements. They help promote a restful sleep environment, while also adding a layer of privacy and warmth. Opting for blackout or heavy, lined curtains can enhance these effects, making them perfect for ensuring comfort and tranquility. Don’t forget a curtain rod!
  • Cozy Bedroom Decor: From accent pillows and throw blankets to bedside table lamps and wall art, bedroom accessories should be both functional and decorative. Coordinate the color and pattern with the overall bedroom color scheme and cozy style to bring your design vision to life.

On one hand, bed + bathrooms are undeniably practical spaces. They serve a very specific purpose and are often the smallest rooms in any home. On the other hand, bed + bathrooms also double as havens for cleansing and self-care, an intimate escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Small room, big personality.

Designing a cozy bathroom that's both functional and stylish involves combining practicality with aesthetic appeal. Whether you're in the process of a bed + bathroom remodel or looking to makeover your existing one, these are the key elements to include in your design**:

  • Tile: Tile is typically the first choice you’ll want to make when designing a bathroom. You may opt to tile the entire bathroom or just the floors in a powder room or backsplash for the shower or bathtub area. Select tiles that are durable, non-slip, and easy to clean. Tiles range in all different shapes, sizes, materials, and layouts. From penny rounds to large format floor tiles, zellige to subway tile, or checkerboard to herringbone, your choice of tile will set the tone for the whole bathroom. And don’t forget the grout! Your choice of grout color can completely change the way your tile looks in the space.
  • Paint or Wallpaper: If you don’t choose to tile your walls, you’ll want to select a paint or wallpaper that can withstand moisture and humidity. Vinyl wallpaper is best for this application. We are partial to covering walls, ceilings, and trim in a uniform paint color to create a cohesive look. Or consider an accent wall to serve as a focal point.
  • Bathroom Vanity: The bed + bathroom vanity should balance the cozy style with functionality, offering adequate storage and countertop space. The vanity provides place to wash hands or brush teeth, and storage for toiletries and personal care items. It’s common for modern bathrooms to include a vanity with a double sink. Sink options include under-mount, vessel, and pedestal sinks and range in materials from porcelain, stone, or glass.
  • Mirror or Medicine Cabinet: Choose a mirror or medicine cabinet that complements the vanity in size and style. Consider a framed mirror that matches the bathroom’s cozy design style, or a frameless mirror for a sleek, more modern look.
  • Toilet & Sink: The modern standard for toilets and sinks is white porcelain. But if you really want to make a statement, consider going with a color! Colored fixtures are having a comeback moment or you can source a vintage option.
  • Shower or Bathtub (for full baths): Depending on the size and layout of the bathroom, you may opt for a shower or bathtub (or a bathtub with shower combination). A shower will consist of a showerhead, faucet controls, and a shower enclosure (shower curtain or glass door), while a bathtub provides a space for soaking and relaxation. If you have the space, you may opt for a separate shower and a freestanding clawfoot tub.
  • Lighting: Combine task, ambient, and accent lighting for a layered lighting scheme. Consider the placement of lighting fixtures to eliminate shadows and evenly light the space. Dimmer switches can adjust the mood. Sconces are popular options for vanity areas.
  • Faucets: Faucets are an opportunity to add a decorative touch. Select finishes that match other metal elements in the bathroom, such as cabinet hardware or lighting fixtures. Consider water-saving models for environmental sustainability.
  • Cozy Bathroom Decor: From bath mats and shower curtains to soap dishes, toothbrush and toilet paper holders, bath accessories should be both functional and decorative. Coordinate the color and pattern with the overall color scheme and cozy style to bring your design vision to life.

What materials and home decor should I use to achieve a cozy bed + bathroom design?

Cozy interior design is all about comfort. If you want your bed + bathroom to feel extra cozy, focus on soft lighting, plush textiles, and comfortable furnishings. A cozy space is one that evokes warmth and promotes relaxation. Think: big, comfy cloud couches, soft rugs, chunky knit throws, and lots of cushions and throw pillows (cozy maxing, anyone?). If your space is larger, try to create more intimate seating areas that encourage conversation and connection. Choose a color palette that is warm and soothing. Neutrals are most common for cozy spaces, but if you want to add color, consider earthy tones, soft pastels, or rich jewel tones.
