Spoak stance on AI

Our stance on AI is simple: it’s a productivity tool, not a creativity tool.

As we’ve watched the creative platforms around us succumb to AI generation, our stance on this has crystallized into a red line that cannot be crossed.

Said simply: AI does not, has not, and will not, make any creative judgment calls inside the Spoak ecosystem. Every single Spoak design is created by a real human.

Some examples of how we use AI in practice:

Magic Render takes the design that you created and makes it photorealistic. AI is helping us convert a 2D design file into a 3D image. It is not influencing what that design contains.

Magic Upholstery allows you to reupholster furniture with any fabric of your choosing. AI allows that to happen in seconds, as opposed to the painstaking manual process of creating a pixel-perfect mask of the furniture item. AI makes no creative call on the fabric or the furniture item in question when it reupholsters.

While this feels morally unambiguous to us, what we’re still left to contend with is the environmental impact. To combat this, we donate a percentage of our membership proceeds monthly to Carbon 180

We chose Carbon 180 for two reasons:

  1. Many climate-focused non-profits center their efforts on reducing future output of CO2. Carbon 180 works to eliminate the existing CO2 already in our atmosphere to help reverse the damage.
  2. We believe tech can be a force for good (or we wouldn’t be here). Carbon 180 does, too: its work bridges the gap between scientists, lawmakers, and tech startups. We feel strongly that not all software is evil. If built thoughtfully, they can have immensely positive global impact.

Our donation is contingent on our user base each month, and therefore is difficult to report on, but as of writing, it contributes to over 6 metric tons of CO2 removed from the atmosphere every year.
