A Design Lover’s Guide to Miami, the Magic City

Miami, Florida. A gem in the Southeastern corner of the United States that's lovely to visit year-round, but particularly special between November and March when the weather drops in most other parts of the country. A favorite, especially amongst New Yorkers and groups of friends who don't hesitate to hop on a three-hour flight for a weekend getaway or extended stay (thanks to remote work). I’m no exception and have enjoyed several trips to the Sunshine State to seek warmer temperatures and vitamin D.

Miami isn't all beach, though. The city has a rich history of art deco architecture, an impressive contemporary art scene, fantastic food options, and so much more. The Latin influence is abundant in the city, particularly with Cuban flair that enriches the neighborhoods and local businesses. The atmosphere sets the stage for a rich interior design scene full of color, pattern, and texture.

If you’re looking for a design-forward itinerary of what to do, see, and eat in Miami, here is our list of favorite places and things in “The Magic City”!

Stay

The quiet little sister of the larger and more lavish Faena Hotel has a lot to offer. The only downside is that this hotel does not have a pool, but you do get access to the beachfront Faena chairs and menu, so your experience on the sand is well worth it.

The largest of all the hotels on this list, the 1 Hotel is guaranteed to be an impressive accommodation in Miami’s South Beach area. This hotel is perfect for anyone who prefers a minimal aesthetic and on-site dining options.

Originally designed by the California-based boutique hotel chain Palihouse, Hotel Trouvail is a great budget option that still boasts chic interiors and comfortable accommodations. There is no beachside service, but the hotel provides Business & Pleasure Co. umbrellas and chairs for guests to use on the sand, just a block away.

Eat & Drink

The Argentinian food here is a must. Try and get a table outside near the riverside to see some manatees swimming while you graze on your food.

Truly one of the most delicious pizza places (in our top 3 of all time!). Get a white and a red to try it all. The same advice goes for their natural wine too!

Arguably the most popular bakery in Miami, this Jewish establishment consistently has a wait, and for a good reason. Pro tip: Don’t plan for Saturday brunch here. It will be closed due to Shabbat.

Come for the good tunes and speaker system, stay for loungey interiors and 10/10 vibes. There might be a line to get in here, but it moves fast and is worth the wait.
