Layout tips for a functional and designer approved guest bedroom.

Whether you are designing for yourself or someone else, guest bedrooms should be cozy and comfortable, providing a space to unwind, recharge, and escape the chaos of the world. Even if your typical design style is more maximalist, guest bedrooms usually lean more minimalist to offer a serene backdrop for a good night’s sleep. Guest Bedroom layouts are also more simple. The square footage of your room and size of your bed frame will typically dictate the best layout.

These are some of the most common guest bedroom furniture pieces that you’ll need to account for on your floor plan with tips on the best ways to arrange them in your space:

Bed: The bed is the centerpiece and typical focal point of any bedroom, providing a comfortable and restful place to sleep. It typically includes a mattress, bed frame, and headboard. While mattress sizes are standard (ranging from twin to california king), bed frames can really vary so make sure you take the bed frame size (not just the mattress) into account when planning your layout. If you have the space, it’s good to have at least 24 inches of walking space on either side of the bed. If not, you may want to put one side of the bed against a wall to maximize walking space. Pro tip: if you want good bedroom feng shui, place your bed facing the door, either opposite or diagonally.
Nightstands: Nightstands (or bedside tables) are small tables or cabinets placed on either side of the bed. They provide a convenient surface for placing bedside lamps, alarm clocks, books, and other personal items. Pro tip: Bedside tables should be placed 2-4 inches from the bed frame and no more than 24 inches deep (any deeper and it can be pretty uncomfortable to get in and out of bed). If you choose to add a table lamp or a sconce, keep in mind the depth of the light to ensure you have enough space on the bedside table.
Dresser or Chest of Drawers: A dresser or chest of drawers offers storage space for clothing, accessories, and other personal belongings. It usually consists of multiple drawers and may also have a mirror attached.
Wardrobe or Closet: A wardrobe or closet is used for storing clothing, shoes, and other items. It can be a freestanding piece of furniture or a built-in closet with shelves, hanging rods, and drawers. Pro tip: If you plan for your wardrobe or closet to include hanging rods, you will need a minimum of 22 inches of depth for a standard hanger to fit comfortably.
Area Rug: It’s common to include an area rug in a bedroom for extra warmth and coziness. There are three common layout options for rugs in the bedroom. Option 1, place the bed and nightstands entirely on the rug. Option 2, place ⅔ of the bed on the rug, with 24 inches extending beyond the sides of the bed. Option 3, place two runners along each side of the bed (the runners should be wider than the bedside tables, if possible).
Seating: Depending on the size of the bedroom, seating options such as an accent armchair, bench, or ottoman can be included. These provide a cozy spot for reading, relaxing, or putting on shoes. If you have the space, we highly recommend a bench at the end of a bed for our furry friends.
Desk (optional): If the bedroom doubles as a workspace or study area — most common for guest bedrooms or kids bedrooms — a desk can be added. It provides a designated space for a computer, books, and other work-related items.
Storage Solutions (optional): Additional storage solutions such as shelves, cabinets, or storage benches can be incorporated to keep the bedroom organized and clutter-free. It’s important to keep them in mind when creating your floor plan so you account for the space they will take up in your walking paths.

Remember, these are just the basics. The specific furniture arrangement and additional pieces may vary based on personal preferences and the size or shape of the guest bedroom. What is the best way to design a guest bedroom layout?

Navigating the maze of spatial planning isn't just a step in your design journey—it's the secret sauce to making your space sing. Sure, it's not the glitzy, glam decorating part where colors and textures take the stage, but think of it as the unsung hero. Diving deep into planning means you're setting yourself up for a smooth ride, dodging those pesky"I wish I'd thought of that" moments. The more planning you do upfront will save you a lot of time (and money!) in the long run. Plus, having accurate measurements are key to successful furniture (read: treasure) hunting. Having your space measured to a T is like having a map where X marks the spot of your next great find.

Don't shy away from playing musical chairs with your layout. It may take a few iterations to achieve the perfect floor plan. Don't be afraid to try out different furniture arrangements. Mix, match, and move things around until it feels just right, reflecting your unique style and meeting your functional needs.

Here are some best practices to guide you in the process of designing a square guest bedroom layout:

Start with functionality and purpose: Begin by outlining the primary needs in your space and desired function of the room. Sketch out a plan that breaks down the guest bedroom's different zones and their intended uses. Got a crowd to please? Make sure your layout can accommodate everyone’s needs. If you have existing furniture pieces you’d be upset to get rid of, make sure you account for these as well (their purpose is sentimental!) and plan around them to give them the spotlight they deserve.
Identify the focal point: Next, find your room's showstopper. The focal point could be a cozy fireplace, a window framing the perfect view, or an art piece that's all kinds of wow. Arrange the rest of the furniture around this focal point to create a harmonious guest bedroom flow.
Consider traffic flow: Keep in mind the natural flow of movement within the room. Ensure that there is enough space for everyone to move around comfortably without any obstructions. Leave clear pathways between furniture groupings to allow for easy navigation — 18 inches minimum between furniture pieces, 30 inches minimum for walkways.
Scale and proportion: Pay attention to the scale and proportion of the furniture pieces in relation to the size of your guest bedroom. Avoid overcrowding your space with oversized furniture or leaving it feeling empty with undersized pieces. Achieve a sense of balance and symmetry in the room by distributing furniture and decor elements evenly. This can be done by placing matching or similar items on opposite sides of the room.

What is a floor plan and where do I start?

A floor plan is essentially a diagram offering a bird's-eye-view perspective of your space. Like peeking into your guest bedroom from above, floor plans help bridge the gap between imagination and reality so you can visualize how your space will function.

Floor plans can vary significantly in detail and style. Some may resemble blueprints, focusing strictly on delineating walls, doors, and other structural elements, while others might include detailed layouts complete with furniture and decor placements. This versatility makes floor plans an indispensable tool in architecture, real estate, and interior design, facilitating a clear understanding of a space's structure and potential functionality.

Accurate room dimensions are key when creating a floor plan. If you don’t have an existing floor plan or blueprint with dimensions (from your building inspector or landlord), you’ll need to create one. A trusty measuring tape is an indispensable tool for accurately measuring the dimensions of your guest bedroom. It will help you determine the length and width of walls, windows, doors, and other architectural features. There are plenty of digital measuring tape tools out there. And while you know we love our digital tools ;), nothing beats the good ‘ol analog measuring tape when it comes to getting accurate measurements of your space. The last thing you want is a too-small area rug or an assembled sofa bed that can’t fit through your front door. Trust us.

Even if you do have an existing floor plan or blueprint, it’s always a good idea to confirm the measurements (you know what they say, measure twice!). Measure every nook and cranny. Note fixtures and architectural elements like outlets, plumbing hookups, and window and door openings so you have them handy when you create your layout. Every inch (or centimeter) counts.
