Rattan is a type of palm with long and tough stems used in wickerwork. While this material is popular in boho design, it can be used with other design styles too. Most recently, we've been (eye) swooning over the material in Athena Calderone's line for Crate & Barrel. Rattan is versatile and minimal in style, which is probably why it's such a hit in design. Plus, it can be painted or stained to alter its color (although we think the natural cream gives a clean base to work from).
