The Coverlet: Why Investing in This Seasonless Bedding Item Is Worth Every Penny

Not quite a comforter and not quite a quilt, a coverlet is a versatile, surprisingly season-less bedding choice. Our favorite is the Check Coverlet by Dusen Dusen -- read on to discover why.

Last summer, on the eve of my birthday, I decided to treat myself to an impulse buy—a Dusen Dusen coverlet. I had been a fan of the brand for a while, even before they started adding home goods to their offerings. The exciting shapes and bold colorways that their clothing was once known for took a new form entirely—from towels to tissue boxes, oven mitts, pillows, bedding and more! So when I found the often sold-out, soft beige asymmetrical Check Coverlet available at Bloomingdales, I checked out without hesitation. Happy birthday to me!

Fun aesthetics aside, I started investing in bedding a few years ago when I found out that natural fabrics, such as linen, are breathable, soften with time, and last for years with proper care. So when I bought the coverlet, I envisioned pairing it up with my go-to white linen sheets. I also wanted to put my comforter away for the summer (perhaps to get some relief from my heater, aka my partner). However, summer turned into fall, and then winter came, and all of a sudden, it had almost been a whole year later, and this coverlet had not left my bed. So if you're curious how my impulse purchase turned into the most used item from my linen closet, keep on reading.

The luxurious feel of matelassé.

The Dusen Dusen coverlet is woven in the matelassé style, a weaving technique invented by English man Robert Elsden in the 18th century to replicate the look that the French, more specifically, the city of Marseilles, was so famously known for—whitework or "trapunto." Whitework was a hand-quilted fabric composed of layers, while the matelassé technique created the padded look without the added weight of the layers found in whitework. This technique makes the coverlet feel cozier, look more substantial than your typical throw blanket, and has the added benefit of being less of a stove than its popular cousin, the quilt.

Linen sheets, meet your summer match.

One of the most significant appealing factors of linen bedding is its breathability. Still, we often fill that linen duvet with comforters that block that airflow, which is certainly a cloud of comfort in the wintertime, but not so much in the summer! The coverlet is 100% cotton (hello breathability) but has the lightest polyester filling, which brings the right amount of warmth during those hot summer nights.

A layered winter.

When the winter season rolls around, along with it comes the comforter, dressed in either cotton or a linen duvet. I top off the winter bedding with the coverlet folded in half and at the end of the bed, but it is not purely for aesthetics! Like other couples, I naturally run cold while my partner runs hot. So, in the winter months, this coverlet works overtime! There have been countless nights when I've reached for the coverlet while my partner pushed it away. A solution for a typical couple's dilemma!

When I purchased the Dusen Dusen coverlet, I never imagined it to be such a seasonless workhorse, but now, I cannot imagine my bed without that extra layer of coziness. Thankfully, the brand has introduced new colorways and patterns, so naturally, I already have my eyes set on the soft blue and white Dot Coverlet—just in time to breathe some fresh vibes into my room.
